Ahead of his time

Pat McCrory just can’t help himself. He’s going to say what he thinks sounds good regardless if it’s true or not. That might be alright telling tall tales around the campfire, but it doesn’t work when you’re the sitting governor talking to an audience of thousands.

On a radio show this week, McCrory claimed that Bruce Springsteen canceled his Greensboro show because of poor ticket sales, not, as The Boss stated, because of HB2. That’s just not true. It’s not even close and Politifact called him out. They gave him a “Pants on Fire” rating for lying. Why in the world would he have said that?

McCrory also blamed his interviewers for his poor performance on Meet the Press and Fox News. That’s another pattern the governor follows. It’s never his fault and if he can’t find a real reason for his failure, he makes one up.

McCrory’s following a trend in GOP politics. At one time the Republicans claimed to be the party of personal responsibility. Today, they are a party of victims looking for scapegoats. It’s everybody’s fault but their own.

At the national level, Republicans are blaming Obama for creating Donald Trump. And Donald Trump, the guy who single-handedly revived the the birth certificate debate, is blaming Hillary Clinton for creating birtherism. The GOP is a party in the throes of self-destruction and they’re pointing fingers instead of looking at themselves.

McCrory is blaming poor tickets sales for Springsteen pulling out of the state. He’s blaming outside liberal groups for creating the outrage over HB2. He’s blaming interviewers for his inability to articulate a message. Maybe he is a national leader in the new Republican Party.

Republicans seem to be following his lead. They’re quickly becoming a party that lacks a moral compass and, with Trump as the nominee, truth really has little relevance. They’re no longer much of a conservative party as they rally around Trump. They’re a party without an ideological bearing. Their presidential nominee believes that attention is an end in itself and policies don’t matter except to garner views, ratings, or clicks.

Pat McCrory really is a fitting symbol of the GOP today. He was making stuff up long before anybody dreamed that Donald Trump would be leading the Republican ticket and truth only matters when it’s helpful. He’s just a man ahead of time.

You’re right, but even Donald Trump said he thought the NC GOP had made a mistake by enacting HB2. It’s pretty bad when even Trump says you’re wrong.

Every person on this thread that has currently, has in the past, and will continue to hold or submit gov’t paperwork with the term ‘Sex’ on it is engaging in racism and discrimination under the left’s new philosophy. Your driver’s license states ‘Sex’ M or F, you are a racist. If a gov’t document has your name on it that states, ‘Sex’ M of F, you are a racist. Either you understand logic, reality and science, or you believe in a lie that is being spread like ignorant wildfire. And for those not fluent in American English: Ignorant defined.
    1. lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned:
    an ignorant man.
2.lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact:
    ignorant of quantum physics.
    3.uninformed; unaware.
4.due to or showing lack of knowledge or training:

One could also place scientific biology in the use of ignorant.

Thank you, Mark. I can’t speak for everyone certainly, but on my own behalf, I certainly appreciate your making those distinctions in terminology in your post.

I’ve labored, albeit delusionally, for decades with the understanding that “sex”, indicated exclusively as ‘M’ denoting a male and “F” denoting a female was categorically wrong! It has nothing to do with gender at all but national origin and ethnicity. I had no idea! Having filled out thousands of those forms using those very letters too, I was recklessly contributing to the racism of our nation without knowing it.

As a token of my appreciation, I’ve likewise included a definition from the dictionary for you. I’m still amazed I found it. I’m taking it for granted that your command of the language is sufficient.

      Moron
      noun mo·ron \ˈmȯr-ˌän\
: a very stupid or foolish person

You can keep your health care plan and doctor. You will save over $2,500 dollars a year on medical costs. I didn’t know Hillary had her own email. I only learn things from the newspaper after they happen. I’m gonna bring people together. I’m going to fundamentally change America. Doesn’t define what change or fundamental is so it’s open to interpretation. Yup, y’all keep providing entertainment to the educated and principled by swallowing everything the left and obama puts in your mouth

One would think such blatant partisanship should embarrass even a far left blogger like Mr. Mills. But he apparently has no qualms about his relentless insulting diatribes against the Governor. No doubt he realizes that McCrory is a prime candidate for a Democrat win in this years elections. But his insidious partisan tirades against the Governor are replete with hyperbole and shameless misinformation that suggest the musings of an unprincipled political hack rather than a keen observer of contemporary politics.

    • Hmmm

Methinks Ebrun has invested in a thesaurus to try and make his whining about Thomas’s fair blows on McCrory sound intellectual and stuff. Makes it seem more grown up than “You’re a mean poopyhead for pointing out that McCrory and his party have a hard time telling the truth about objective facts.”

      • Ebrun

“Poopyhead”? Wow, nothing partisan about that. Just juvenile.

    • Apply Liberally

One would think such blatant partisanship, shown in each and every one of his posts, should embarrass even a far-right poster like Ebrun. But he apparently has no qualms about his relentlessly insulting diatribes against Dems, liberals, or Mr. Mills. No doubt he realizes that McCrory is, as of now, a prime candidate to lose to the Dems in this year’s elections. Thus, he is beside himself, given all his past posts that have touted the GOP’s rise to power, or have implied Republican domination of state government in the future. His insidious partisan tirades against progressives are replete with hyperbole and shameless misinformation that suggest the musings of an unprincipled, intolerant, and ignorant man rather than a keen observer of contemporary politics.
(Thanks, Ebrun, for the template. Made it so easy! And, insofar as my correcting your spelling errors, you’re welcome, too.)

      • Ebrun

Wow, A.L. I didn’t realize you were such a talented writer. I love your originally and how you articulate your opinions with such eloquent prose. LOL

“his insidious partisan tirades against the Governor are replete with hyperbole and shameless misinformation that suggest the musings of an unprincipled political hack rather than a keen observer of contemporary politics.”

      Gawd, Ebrun. That’s a mouthful.

      • Ebrun

Glad you liked it. It’s good to know my prose didn’t fly over you head like it apparently has for some who post here.

        • An Observer

Actually, your “prose” didn’t fly at all.

          • Ebrun

Aw, Shucks, Observer, suspicions confirmed. I was sure hoping that was meant to be a positive comment. But as the old saying goes, sticks and stones can—.” Oh shoot, I don’t mean to appear supercilious. I am sure you get my gist.

    • Eilene

Ebrun, I would like to know what shameless information you are referring to. You and I don’t agree on much, but you’ve always been civil to me. I know I’m a liberal, but I really do like to fact-check the stuff I read to make sure they are telling the truth, and I honestly can’t think of a thing that Thomas has put out as fact that wasn’t true. Now, he has put forth many opinions that you probably didn’t agree with… but that is not misinformation, that is just making one side of an idealogical argument. If I’m wrong, give me some examples.

      • Ebrun

Gosh Eilene, Mills has been so harshly critical of the Governor in all his blogs on state politics that I would have to conduct some intense research to itemize examples of misinformation. However, I have posted rebuttals on many of his-over-the top assertions. Yes, many are only opinions, but they are often presented as if they were factual.

In the current thread Mills asserts that “McCrory also blamed his interviewers for his poor performance on Meet the Press and Fox News.” This is a prime example of misinformation. Neither the Governor nor any of his supporters thought he gave a poor performance on national TV interviews. (In fact, I thought he handled himself very well given the obvious hostility of his questioners.) It’s Mills’ opinion that the Governor gave a poor performance. Its blatant misinformation to assert the the Governor blamed his interviewers for his “poor performance.” He did no such thing.

In another recent thread, Mills claims that NC resisted the GOP wave in 2014. I have pointed out that Republicans had maxed out there political strength in NC as a result of their 2010 and 2012 election victories. As a result of the GOP wave in 14, NC Republicans held on to the vast majority of their previous election gains and even deleted an incumbent U.S. Senator. So I consider Mr. Mills’ claim that NC resisted the GOP wave in 2014 as inaccurate and misleading.

Mills also asserts that the GOP “is a party in the throes of self destruction.” While this is his opinion, it is contradicted by the actual situation in the country. While the GOP may lose the Presidential race this year as a result of Donald Trump, it is far from self destructing with a majority of Governors, state legislatures and even in the Congress. So his opinion, stated as factual, is again inaccurate and misleading.

“Conservatives define themselves in terms of what they oppose.”
    ~George Will

During the Obama years, Conservatives have been able to rally around opposition to anything the president favored. If the president favored health care, they opposed it. If the president favored closing Guantanamo, conservatives were against it. If the president had proposed taking long, deep breaths, the Republican Party would have expired from lack of oxygen.

North Carolina conservatives are opposed to education, unions, black voters, the minimum wage, Mexicans, legal recourse for discrimination and toilets. They also oppose successful businesses, the media, and liberals. They opposed billions of dollars in Medicaid money flowing into the state from the federal government, even though North Carolinians have paid for it already.

President Obama must have proposed good sense at some point because Gov. McCrory and the North Carolina GOP are adamantly opposed to it. In the land of the brainless, the half-wit is king.

    • Smithson Mills

      You nailed it.

Jay Ligon. You are spot on! Can’t say it any better.
