Here comes the cavalry

Here comes the cavalry. Patriot Majority USA, a Democratic super PAC, announced it’s going spend $500,000 on behalf of Kay Hagan beginning next week. That’s after Republican super PACs, most notably Americans for Prosperity, have spent almost $7 million over the past three months or so pummeling Hagan.

The GOP ads have certainly had an effect. A Civitas poll showed that Hagan’s negatives have increased substantially since the attack ads began. But the campaign also shows Hagan’s resilience. Her positives are only down three points and seven million dollars of almost unanswered spending has not taken her out of the game.

So far, the GOP’s strategy consists of wrapping Hagan around Obama and the unpopular health care law, particularly the “if you like it, you can keep it” promise. If the election becomes a referendum on Obamacare, then the strategy might effective. However, a rating by National Journal named Hagan the country’s most moderate Senator. That’s a pretty good place to be in the country’s most competitive state.
