McCrory unchained

Pat McCrory’s at it again. Opening his mouth unscripted and making up stuff. This time it’s about visiting the General Assembly.

Seems McCrory decided to stop by the legislature yesterday. For some reason, he tried to skirt through a committee room. Unfortunately, the House Rules Committee was meeting and, sure enough, somebody recognized him. According to WRAL, the governor seemed surprised when Chair Tim Moore drew attention to him.

When asked about his excursion through the legislative building McCrory replied, “I come here often just to have interaction. I cut through here on the way to the house, back and forth to the house often.” I guess he’s usually in disguise since that was certainly news to the regular crowd that hangs around the General Assembly.

Sound familiar? Just about a year ago, McCrory told reporters that he stopped by Moral Monday protests frequently to talk to protesters. That was a lie, of course, and his press office had to walk it back. They say he encountered rude people on his walk to the Capitol one morning.

I must say, though, it’s refreshing to see McCrory unchained again. He sure has been boring since his press people put him in a box. The glory days of listening to McCrory describe his fantasy life may be over, but just this glimpse brings a smile and trip down memory lane.

Remember the time he blamed Obama for cutting unemployment benefits when, in fact, it was him and the legislature? Or the time he blamed his predecessor, Bev Perdue, for a budget that didn’t give teachers raises when, really, the budget was passed by the GOP legislature who overrode Perdue’s veto to pass it? Or when his secretary told a group of protesters that he was in a meeting and unavailable but he was really playing catch with his Chief of Staff behind the capitol? Or what about the big one? When asked what further restrictions he would put on abortion, he replied simply and firmly “None,” but then went on sign a bill restricting abortion.

Oh, yeah. Those were the days. Thanks for the memories, Governor. Hope you can get out a little more.

But how can McCrory’s tattle-tale handling of that restaurant staffer confrontation in Charlotte be left off the blaming list? Yes, the dude rudely voiced displeasure with McCrory, but governors show know that they are very public figures and are targets for that sort of stuff. Pat could have disarmed things in a genuine, interactive way. Instead, his people go to the guy’s boss and get him fired.
