Getting our money’s worth

by | Jan 20, 2017 | Politics

President (I cringe to type it) Donald Trump has put together the worst cabinet in history. It’s a disgrace. But back here in Raleigh, where the Democratic comeback has begun, Roy Cooper, has chosen a team of which to be proud. This contrast points the way toward renewed national success.

Of all Trump’s nominees, maybe three are fit for their offices. Mattis, Kelly and Chao are qualified and capable. The others run from laughable to horrifying, especially DeVos and Puzder. The new president obviously has low standards and abysmal judgment. Things are very different in Cooper World. Every new announcement strengthens our confidence in his team. Michael Regan is well versed in environmental science; Susi Hamilton has a deep appreciation of film and tourism. And so on. Clearly, Governor Cooper has an eye for talent. And he takes seriously the job of personnel choice.

The contrast between Raleigh and Washington is glaring, and it reveals much about how the two parties approach governing. As Matthew Yglesias wrote, Senate Republicans are shockingly indifferent to Team Trump’s unsuitability. That’s because Republicans do not really want government to work.

But  Democrats do–and so does the public. Taxes, like death, are inevitable, and ordinary people want to get a good deal for their money. The value that Cooper and other Democrats place upon competence is step one toward proving that the Democrats and middle class voters are in sync.
