Getting a pass

The media gave Orson Scott Card a pass. Card is the award-winning author that Sen. Phil Berger appointed to the UNC TV Board of Trustees. He’s also a homophobe who calls homosexuality a “dysfunction” and quite clearly compared Obama to Hitler. And none of the media called him on it.

I’m guessing that editorial boards decided that they didn’t want to hear the pretests of the right about freedom of speech and what not. And to the extent that Card has the right to make those comparisons and write inflammatory articles, they are right. But that does not make him suitable to serve on a board that serves the citizens of North Carolina.

Every article that mentions Card’s article that compares Obama to Hitler includes a quote in which Card seems to discount his own theory. “Will these things happen? Of course not. This was an experiment in fictional thinking.” And while this may indicate that his column is fictional, his comparison of Obama to Hitler is not.

Card quite clearly makes the comparison repeatedly throughout the essay. He also make absurd statements of opinion as if they are facts. “Obama is, by character and preference, a dictator. He hates the very idea of compromise; he demonizes his critics and despises even his own toadies in the liberal press,” Card writes in the set up to his fantasy.

His whole fictional premise is based on “truths” about Obama’s character and the failings or complicity of the press. Card argues that his views are within the mainstream of the North Carolina political spectrum. That may be true–if bat shit crazy is on that spectrum. I urge everyone to read his rantings.

Orson Scott Card is a homophobic, right-wing zealot with paranoid fantasies. He has no place on the UNC TV Board of Directors or any public board. The media is negligent in not calling him out and not holding Berger’s feet to the fire for making the appointment in the first place.

Whether he’s a Democrat, Republican, or Green party member has no bearing on whether or not Thomas’ characterization of him is accurate (newsflash; it is). There are plenty of registered dems in the state who haven’t voted for or agreed with the ideals of the Democratic party for years.

No, he’s a Democrat. Inconvenient fact, I know.

I don’t care about party registration. Many states don’t even have it. I care about what the guy writes and says.
