Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blamed Democrats for the election fraud that led to a new Congressional Election in NC-09. Mark Harris, after announcing he will not run in the special election, endorsed a man who told the Charlotte Observer, “I’m just really concerned that we’re having an election stolen without any strong evidence of wrongdoing.” And in a statement, NC GOP Chair Robin Hayes warned McCready, “You will be held responsible for…your role to erase more than 283,000 legal votes by citizens of the Ninth Congressional District.” NC GOP Executive Director Dallas Woodhouse went to twitter to accuse the North Carolina State Board of Elections of wanting to “get Dowless so bad after a decade they choose a sting operation over protecting the democracy.”
In other words, the party of personal responsibility refuses to take any responsibility. Instead, they’re still trying to undermine the credibility of the Democratic Party, Dan McCready, and the State Board of Elections. They aren’t going to accept the rules put in place to protect the sanctity of our elections or the institutions that we need to ensure the continuity of our system of government.
Republicans will claim that Democrats would have done the same thing, but that’s not true. Before Republicans took control of the legislature, Democrats policed their own pretty well. A Democratic operative and opposition researcher supplied much of the evidence that led to the downfall of Democratic House Speaker Jim Black. A Democratic led State Board of Elections held Easley administration officials accountable for petty corruption. Even if there was griping among some Democratic politicos, there were never accusations like the ones being hurled at the highest levels of the Republican Party.
The GOP is quickly becoming a party without morals and a lack of respect for the rule of law. They’ve turned to hyper-partisanship as their default position. They’ll rile a base primed by Fox News to believe anything the Donald Trump or his followers say. They have little regard for the truth and too much regard for winning elections.
Instead of congratulating an elections board for trying to root our real election fraud, they attacked it for undermining an election. Instead of believing overwhelming evidence of fraud, they’ve tried to cover it up. It appears they want to make the new election in NC-09 about Democrats trying to steal it instead of issues important to the people who live there. It’s Orwellian approach to politics.
