Located in western North Carolina along the Georgia border, Macon County was named after Nathaniel Macon, one of the most prominent Republicans in our nation’s early history. Its county seat is Franklin; Macon is known for its number of waterfalls and its popularity as a destination for whitewater rafting.

Presidential PVIs
1988: R+16 (Solid Republican)
1992: R+8 (Leans Republican)
1996: R+18 (Solid Republican)
2000: R+29 (Solid Republican)
2004: R+23 (Solid Republican)

Forecast: Macon County is reliably Republican, and it trended even more strongly Republican in the 2012 election. The county growth rate from 2000 to 2010 was 13.79%, which is about the national average. There was a massive increase in the Hispanic population, from 1.52% in 2000 to 6.57% in 2010. This makes Macon one of the most Hispanic counties in the entire mountain region. Like many other mountain counties, Macon is also attracting lots of retirees, especially from Florida. It remains to be seen how these migrants may affect the county’s politics, which is expected to remain solidly Republican for a long time to come.
