NC Congressmen Feature PRominently In Trump’s Government-In-Exile

To a naive soul, it might seem that Madison Cawthorn fears for his reelection. The Western North Carolina showman was recently down in Florida attending a fundraiser in his own honor to which donors must have contributed $50,000 for the privilege of seeing him in the flesh. Of course, Cawthorn burns through his campaign account at a continuous rate, suggesting that he was simply bilking these wealthy Floridians for the benefit of lavishly compensated staffers. Tawdry indeed. But more disturbing was the primary event for which Cawthorn had flown down to the Sunshine State. With his predecessor Mark Meadows, he was helping scheme out the restoration of Donald Trump.

Trump, who would never deign to spend a single night in rural North Carolina, seems to have taken a liking its mountain politicians. He hired Mark Meadows as his final chief of staff and seems to have stuck with him despite, or because of, the dimwitted mountaineer’s failure to steer him to a successful second term. It wasn’t long after Madison Cawthorn defeated Trump’s choice for the Eleventh District, one Lynda Bennett, that the Orange Autocrat’s minions invited Cawthorn to speak at the Republican National Convention. Trump seems drawn to showboats and populists. Going back to the ludicrous “Our Bob” Reynolds, North Carolina has had a weakness for that kind of provocateur.

In the months since Trump left office, Meadows has remained a constant in the disgraced autocrat’s retinue. He reportedly fed Trump’s delusion that the ex-president would be reinstated this August. It’s always hard to tell whether Meadows is being a blind fanatic or if his ideological zeal and personal dimness draw him into delusions akin to Trump’s. Regardless, Meadows appears a continued servant of the throne. If Donald Trump runs and wins in 2024, there’s a good chance that Mark Meadows will return to the White House as the conquering hero’s aide-de-camp.

Meadows wields influence with Trump, particularly when matters involve North Carolina. He convinced Trump to endorse Ted Budd over Pat McCrory and Mark Walker, delivering a blow to the latter man whom Meadows absolutely detests. And now he has brought Madison Cawthorn into the exiled autocrat’s inner circle. Surely the former president will be getting good advice from a young man who thinks Congress voted on the Emancipation Proclamation.

North Carolina has a rich history of interactions with historical American presidents. John F. Kennedy so liked Governor Terry Sanford that historians believe Kennedy planned to drop L.B.J. from the ticket and replace him with the North Carolinian. Jesse Helms was a constant conservative voice attempting to enforce orthodoxy on the Reagan White House. Opinions differ on Kennedy and Reagan, Sanford and Helms, but surely it is a new twist to see some of our state’s most dubious congressmen advising a man who wants to make himself the first King to rule America since old George III.

Why is this post accompanied by an ad for a stridently pro Trump publication: The Trumpet? How does that happen?

As a native western North Carolinian who now resides in Virginia, I keep a watchful eye on my former homeland. I am literally ill that residents elected two consecutive fools to the congressional seat in the district I long resided. Mark Meadows was bad enough. Madison Cawthorn is ridiculous. The only thing the young fool has in common with the Virginia Madison is his name.

The western Nroth Carolina I remember was far from perfect. But its residents had a sense of proportion, which was a saving grace. That quality is gone.As much as I love that part of the world, I am glad I no longer live there.

As supporters of the Insurrection, Madison Cawthorne and Mark Meadow are members of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, the Terrorists’ High Command, waiting for the delusional Trump take-over in a week. They oppose the Constitution and intend to overthrow the United States with tired lies and Russian propaganda. They disgrace North Carolina and their nation for the purpose of satisfying their uncontrollable ambitions. As co-conspirators in the overthrow attempt, there is a reasonable chance they will spend some time behind bars and less likely that they will be back in the White House ever. One of their fellow conspirators might give them a deal on a cool pillow to use in prison.

Jay, some of your comments seem somewhat extreme when compared with the typical Democratic concerns. However, I do share your concerns about a potential attempt by Trump and his minions to take over the government. (My concerns may be more extreme than yours). Some of my possible paranoia stems from years in academia, where carefully planned backstabbing is par for the course. Another concern of mine stems from my military service, which has caused me to raise certain questions, which I have not seen addressed in the real media.

Retired Lt.Gen. Michael Flynn has been advocating an armed coup. To many, this may seem far-fetched. However, many professional military people have never actually lived in a free society because they entered the military at a young age and spent their entire careers in an institution which has rigid rules and can verge on authoritarianism. It was no accident that about 10% of the white nationalists who attempted the Jan. 6th insurrection had military or police backgrounds. Sadly, the military has also practiced indoctrination of troops. Some of this was that politicians during the Viet Nam conflict were trying to use the military to sell support of the war to the American public. However, some of us were able to retain some semblance of rationality. I became opposed the the Viet Nam conflict once I was serving.

Secondly, why the emphasis on an August installation of Trump? Congress usually takes an annual month of vacation in August. Also, the Supreme Court has finished its term. Is there some feeling among Trump and his minions that the U.S. government will be weakened during this month so that there will be less resistance to a coup?

If anyone can furnish some actual facts either to assuage or bolster my concerns, I welcome them.

Since I share your anxiety about the military, I cannot assuage your concerns on that point. In fact, every week as this insanity continues I grow more apprehensive about the future of this country. It may not be August, but Trump is not going to stop trying to get back in the WH. And he will make it if the GOP succeeds in their onslaught on our election system. I did not expect to end my life in a dictatorship. It is both unreal and all too real.
