The House insurrectionist

by | Nov 2, 2021 | Editor's Blog | 14 comments

Yesterday, the North Carolina House swore in a new member from Gaston County. Donnie Loftis replaced Dana Bumgardner who passed away recently. Loftis is a former county commissioner who stormed the Capitol on January 6. Democrats walked out of the chamber when he was sworn in. Loftis is part of the disloyal opposition, people willing to overthrow the government instead of accept the outcome of an election.

Many Republicans consider Loftis a hero for trying to overturn the election. Others apparently don’t care about his act of sedition. Republicans are defending him instead of condemning him. Loyalty to the party supersedes loyalty to the Constitution.

Loftis has tried to downplay his role in the attack on the Capitol. He issued a statement last week saying, “…I peacefully exercised my first amendment rights in front of the US Capitol, I was surprised and disappointed to watch others storm the entrance as violence ensued. I had absolutely zero involvement in the rioting and categorically condemn the storming of our Capitol building that day.”

But that’s not what he said at the time of the attack. Instead, he bragged in a Facebook post that he was gassed three times and was at the door when the Capitol was breached. He was clearly proud of his accomplishments and acquaintances were cheering him on. He said that he was fulfilling his oath as a soldier to protect the country from threats and considered certifying the election one of those threats.

Republicans can nominate whoever they want to have appointed to fill an unexpired term, but choosing a guy like Loftis is telling. Not only is Loftis less than honest about his role on January 6, he’s clearly dumb enough and gullible enough to believe The Big Lie. He lacks the critical thinking skills to serve in the General Assembly. Now, the GOP can add an insurrectionist to their legislative clown car to join neo-Confederate Larry Pittman and conspiracy theorists like Jeff McNeely.

Republicans, of course, are defending Loftis. They stick by his claim that he was just exercising his First Amendment right to protest, but if he was telling the truth that he was at the Capitol door when it was breeched, he was part of the vanguard that toppled barricades and overran Capitol police trying to protect the building and the Members of Congress inside. If he really got teargassed, he was in the midst of the fray, not peaceably assembled. He was either lying then or lying now. He had little reason to lie then, so I suspect he’s lying now.

Last month, Republicans were defending Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson’s clearly homophobic and bigoted remarks. This week, they are defending an insurrectionist. They’ve become a collection of misfits and misanthropes who care little about the tradition of democracy and everything about the consolidation of power. Their defense of Loftis is more evidence of their deterioration into an authoritarian party.

It would be appropriate to close this posting out by concluding a once honorable political party has allowed itself to be taken over by religious extremists, domestic terrorists, and white supremacists hellbent on satisfying their personal desire to destroy a country that has not taught them the proper amount of respect toward their fellow members of society their parents should have. Watching the trial of that armed and untrained child who was driven by his mother to another state to participate in a riot is beyond depressing, it is horrific. The focus of that criminal prosecution should be the kid’s parent. What kind of parent would assist their child to engage in such activities that were likely to take the lives of others?

The CRT and BLM have become the new Atwater strategy for the south. They are complicated an offer numerous dog whistles to folks who regard critical thought and reflection something akin to being weak, and a cause of headaches.
If republicans can play their cards right, this may be the moment to introduce their notion of freedom consisting of no Social Security or Medicare and huge tax cuts for the wealthy and well to do. Forget the notion of climate change until the next hurricane destroys their home and the insurance company deny their claim and there is no government agency to force them to live up to the services you paid premiums. Such an agency would be government overreach!

      You guys are not listening.
      You need to listen.
      I keep telling you.

      This haughty dismissive garbage

….to folks who regard critical thought and reflection something akin to being weak…

is not helping you at all. It reeks of disdain and hatred.

You guys are not the smartest people in any room you go into. Stop assuming you are and assuming anyone who isn’t you is inferior to your high minded exalted holiness.

Just because these “stupid people” (which is what you mean) don’t agree with you does not mean they don’t understand CRT. They do. Its pretty obvious they do. BLM is even simpler. A truly racist organization that (does nothing for Black people except take their money) filled with Cultural Marxists that are ok being wealthy and elite while the people the pretend to care about
stay right where they are. Oh and they are easy to steer into Burning Looting and Murdering when we need them. Same with ANTIFA except they are communists.

Yeah great people to align yourself with. Sheesh.

I’ve told you guys what you need to do.

Recognize that your party (which used to be my party) is simply wrong and bashing people over the head and telling them they are stupid and trying to force them to live the way YOU WANT THEM TO. Not how they want to

      is wrong wrong wrong.

Here is hoping for another message to be sent in the midterms because it obvious you don’t get it. I guess you’ll have to keep losing until you do.

The democrats lose the house (a given)
Lose the Senate (not so sure)
Pelosi who is too old for real hard work will leave once she is in the minority

Then Impeach and convict Biden (obvious reasons there) If he does not resign. Which will be a perfect ending for a career of a man known as “The Dunce of the Senate” Too bad he won’t realize it. Then he can go get proper treatment and hopefully enjoy what days he has left.
      Impeach Blinkin, (Obvious reasons)
      Impeach Garland (Obvious)
The rest of the rats should run then.

Wait out the rest of the Biden’s term and hopefully your high minded oh so holy exalted ones in the organs of the state don’t blow stuff up on purpose because “its our last chance” or just out of spite. Which being purely emotional beings is entirely possible. Hopefully we can put a stop to the massive stupidity that is going on. When only 30% of your own party agree with what you are doing that a sign you wrong. Ignoring it is stupidity.

The be rid of Kamala ( even democrats don’t like her) If she runs or gets the nomination (doubtful) she will lose.

and then we’ll see in 2024 what happens.

Hopefully we can recover the economy and everything else, and the Democrats are in the wilderness for a very long time until the become Americans again.

I can assure you that as long as you look at your Countrymen as stupid slack jagged rubes and yourself as an elite educated enlightened beings and clearly the “betters” who look down upon the chattle and know everything and they know nothing.

      You are going nowhere good.

Take heed. I am trying to help you guys.

      Good luck

Thanks for your offer, but I believe I will pass. If you’re trying to make me, feel ashamed of the fact I got an education, (be that what it may), don’t waste your time. Spend some time working on your sentence structure and spelling, in lieu of attacking folks that don’t really care what you think of them. # internet troll.

        • Phoenix

No not at all. I am highly educated. However I unlike you, don’t look down on those who don’t as stupid and worthy of nothing more than contempt.

I monitor a lot of liberal sites, unfortunately banned from most, as they frankly aren’t open to a real discussion of things. Just like you. lol.. (do you see a commonality>)

Your attitude is extremely pervasive on the left. Contempt and disdain for for people.

          Its a real problem.

          But whatever suit yourself.

“There are none so blind as those who will not see.”
“You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.”

          Good luck!

            Put down your crack pipe.

          • cocodog

Five errors in grammar and one in spelling. Work on it! Here is a suggestion, old man, try to grasp what the author of the posting writes. Stick to addressing your differences with it. Don’t wonder around, spewing republican truisms. Drop the Gunny Hartman act, I and number of others have been there and done that, believe me it is not impressive except to a want a bee. I am sure, Tom and a few of us would be interested in reading a logical argument.

      • Musicman

Perhaps a better alternative would be to impeach you. Your desire to impeach Biden, Blinken, and Garland are NOT obvious; perhaps you’d care to enlighten us? (Disagreement with you does NOT
        constitute an impeachable offense.)

Politicians lie, it is a tradition in the trade. But, in the past they showed a little class, in the sense they very rarely lied about something that was openly recorded on a camera or taped. But the days of a classy lying politician have ceased to exist. They just lie and deny, even when it is shown on the 11o’clock news.

  4. James Ligon

Republicans have become an anti-American, anti-Constitution terrorist organization.

    • phoenix

its the opposite really. since when is hate America CRT crap American?
Since when is supporting CRT and BLM who hate the constitution etc American? Get real!

Your party is on the wrong path.

      Accept it and change it.

      • Rknte

CRT is not hate America…it’s trying to get White people to accept that we sucked at treating others who looked differently and lived differently (ie. native americans, black and brown people) humanely and fairly. Do you agree that it’s easier to be white than black in America?

        • phoenix

I would say at one time it was. But that was in discrete a (democrat) areas of the country the south and is long over.

Its been long accepted, corrected and we moved on. I don’t get the self flagellation that you guys want to mire yourselves in.

CRT is a legal theory that all law in the USA is racist, and set up to benefit ONE race. The white race.

Which is absurd on its face.

Wrong theory, at the wrong time, and intellectually bankrupt.

          • cocodog

Phoenix, read what I am going to tell you carefully! “CRT is not a legal theory” -(repeat: CRT is not a legal theory.)

It is a theory devised by a few legal scholars to address racism by educating folks. It has been around for some time; it is not new! The Democratic party did not create or adopt it. It is a theory worthy of discussion and reflection by folks who regard race as an issue which promotes disunity today.

You claim to be an educated person, yet the noise that you make cannot support that claim. Of course, your glorious leader and brain trust, Trump claims to be a stable genius. So, it would follow his marry little band of true believers would try to make the same claim.
