The lack of historic knowledge of many folks is beyond my ken.
Yesterday on MSNBC during the early reporting on the horrific assignation of Charlie Kirk, a commentator, I think he was formerly with the FBI, noted the increase in political violence since the early ’50 --- as coming from the Left.
Hmmmm.
No reminder of the historical record of “extrajudicial killings” in our country … which we colloquially refer to as lynchings.
If I have the numbers roughly correct, there’ve been north of 3,500 such events of brown and black folk, and over 1,200 of those of pale complexions since the War, something like 4 incidents here in Chatham County alone.
Recall the history of the 1898 Wilmington “event”. Or look it up. Heck, in 1944, next door in Durham, a black soldier on his way to Camp Butner was shot by the bus driver – ‘cause he wouldn’t move to the back of the bus.
I have to doubt very many of the perps involved in these incidences were “left leaning”.
In the past coupl’a of hours the shooter’s family has been reported to be registered Republican. See Jim Buie's comment below.
Thomas, your point the Republican majority in the NC General Assembly is responsible for enacting our criminal code is on target. As for the most recent prosecutor who handled a case involving the accused, this should be confirmed. There is no doubt, however, that many republicans are hypocrites on crime and gun issues
At what point will Trump’s supporters recognize that he is not a divine instrument, but rather an aging real estate hustler—more invested in personal gain than public good, and whose image is propped up by bravado rather than virtue?
The guy that actually grazed Fat Donny was a Trump supporter, though he wasn’t old enough in 2016 to have voted for him. The guy that they caught before he got a shot off on the golf course DID vote for him in 2016, and decided he’d seen enough the first time. Time after time the mass shooter, the school shooter, the political shooter turns out to be white, male, and hard right. And despite all the speculation (stated as fact) to the contrary, this time was no different on the first two counts and if it’s wrong on the third it will only be a difference in degree not in kind. (This is UTAH ffs… even their left is right).
As Democrats shift to an more aggressive, in-your-face, flexible-facts style of politics like that of the Republicans’, the challenge is to draw a line between no holds barred and civility. No one is winning the vitriol fueled, hyper-partisan, adhominen political arguments except for the anarchists. To save this country, Democrats need new a political rhetoric. I don’t know what should be either.
It's difficult for Trump and others to claim the murderer is a Democrat -- he was a non-voter, attended college for one semester, a dropout, son of a veteran policeman from one of the most conservative states, Utah, and a church-going family. Mormon? Like you, I seriously doubt he has a coherent philosophy or manifesto. The politicalization of mental illness and attempt to profit from violence is deplorable, a virus. Ours has become a culture of trolling, invalidation and dehumanization. https://jimbuie.substack.com/p/lack-of-empathy-inspires-violence
Of course, this murder bothers me. The potential precedence of the act is worrisome, as well. Bothers me as much that the man is being deified, even abetting his martyrdom in the mainstream press. I guess that is the result of the fear of being sued, branded by the Trump administration. Doesn't take much research to find out who he really was as a person.
Ugly Fall will be holding Trump accountable on corruption amongst other criminal charges against the USA.
😒……… I swear, if trump could blame his upbringing on the left, he would.

He literally asked for it, but didn’t realize he would be the sacrifice to guns. https://open.substack.com/pub/aicomic/p/charlie-kirk-in-2023-i-think-its?r=9qlzw&utm_medium=ios

There’s another Substack I read regularly that had an interesting take on this:

This morning's NYT cited a study that 52% of violent political crime is from the right wing, while 8% is attributed to the left.
Another commentor put it in historical perspective; pp. "Kirks murder is Trump and the RW's Reichstag."
