Have you forgotten his total lack of support for North Carolinians after the destruction caused by Helene? Appointed by trump directly. No mention of this in your article.
As a Caniac who was Caniac when Caniac wasn’t cool, I genuinely love seeing Whatley toepick on this particular unforced error, but he probably/might have used the “generic player” to avoid running afoul of NIL rights. (He didn’t think about the fact that the logo on the jersey is copyrighted too, apparently.)
There’s nothing wrong with being a bandwagon fan — many if not most Canes fans started that way in either 2002 or 2006, and it’s not at all unusual for any team that’s doing well to acquire new fans in such fashion. What’s hilarious is that he appears to be trying to appear as *not* a bandwagoner, when all he really needed to do was acknowledge that, “Hey, I’m new to this hockey thing but it sure looks exciting and good for the state economy too!” Instead he decided to bet that nobody would look past the cardboard cutout of a fan and see the phony behind it. Sounds like he lost that bet bigly. But I’m not signing up for nüTwittter to see how bad it got for him.
In the immortal words of Bugs Bunny: “what a Maroon”.
Whatley's play here feels a bit like stolen valor. Trying to get credit for being adjacent to something admirable. It's a bush league move.
You may be right, this may fade from public awareness by the time the election comes around, but maybe not. The guy is showing his true self. Just like his daddy in the White House.
Do you think he'll show up at the UFC cluster fuck?

Perfect analysis
Whatley seems to have been effective morphing the GOP into a Trump cult and raising money (though, again, Trump). Otherwise he's a nonentity.
In the words of Bugs Bunny, What a maroon!
