May I also mention Governor Terry Sanford- Governor 1961-1965. He steered NC through the early sixties civil rights movement with a steady hand, sparing us the ignorance and bloodshed of the deep south states. A strong supporter of public and university education as well.
Well done. You are right McCrory was definitely inexperienced. Now the North Carolina Democratic Party must organize precinct by precinct to reduce the Republican majority in the General Assembly even if its by winning an additional two or three seats each.
I treasure my copy of that book. Gov. Scott inscribed a page with a detailed letter to Daddy. The photo of him and his fingers holding his smoke sure brings back both a visual and a scent memory - our living room always bore the smell of his ever-present cigarettes.
Fun fact: Daddy lost his finger as a teen messing around with big firecrackers. He had a knack for not waving that hand it around too prominently, but it was still obvious. Mama never allowed me or my younger brother to play with fireworks.
It wasn’t for nothin’ I referred to Patty Mac as “McCrony”. He was trying to be the grifter that Fat Donny Two-Times actually is. And he’s definitely the kind of suck-up that Trump loves. And when he becomes the first governor in the history of the state to be VOTED OUT of office, I had a brief flash of hope that MAYBE our citizens were coming around to what they were voting for. Alas, it was just a case of McCrony being so VERY unfit that even MAGA could see it (plus it was 2020 with all that entailed). The really peculiar thing is that McCrony tried to use Hurricane Matthew as a bulwark against Cooper, and it fell flat. The ad he ran had a voiceover saying “When Hurricane Matthew hit the state,Pat McCrony did his job.” Which is perhaps the strangest and most awkward political ad I’ve ever heard.
But TIL that I’m slightly older than Thomas. Because I was eight when Bob Scott was elected. But I don’t remember him all that well either. Oh, to have that kind of innocence again. But some things once seen…
You’re absolutely correct. I think it was the Matthew connection that threw my memory off track. Well… that and advancing age. But Matthew was only a month or so prior to the election which seems too late in the year, but there we are. Or were.
Spot on, Thomas.
Thanks for the brief history lesson. As a fairly new resident, I appreciate this.

Excellent look at many NC Governors and what they accomplished.

Roy Cooper won his first time in 2016. That's when McCrory lost to Cooper.
