I agree — it makes no sense for Republicans to run on COVID. They botched the response from the start, much like the way the IRAN War is being handled: big decisions, no real plan. The virus hit fast and the country wasn’t ready. Trump downplayed it, saying it was small and would disappear, but it spread and killed thousands. His early China travel restriction helped a bit, but nothing followed. Testing collapsed, hospitals ran out of protective gear, governors begged for supplies, and the "White House fought with them instead of coordinating".
Trump kept insisting the virus was under control and floated ideas like bleach and sunlight, leaving doctors stunned. Lockdowns came too late, reopening came too early, and the virus surged again.
Operation Warp Speed pushed vaccines out quickly — the strongest part of his response — but Trump barely promoted them once they arrived. The country split, many refused the shots, and the death toll kept rising.
By the end, more than a million Americans were gone. The economy was battered, families were grieving, and the nation was exhausted. Some things worked, but far more didn’t, and the cost was enormous.
Jamie Ager should win in Western NC, District 11, but needs money. Richard Ojeda, District 9,might have a chance, as well as Paul Barringer, District 13, and just maybe Chuck Hubbard, District 5. Of course, there's Don Davis trying to hold his seat in District 1.
There's also a chance to take the NC House and certainly to break the Supermajority in the NC Senate.
Ager is getting my vote. I called the Henderson County BoE and was delighted to hear that I could vote overseas absentee as easily as I did in ‘24. I was really holding my breath after all the shenanigans that the legislature has pulled. I’m still thinking there will be trouble after the election unless Dems, Unaffiliated and disaffected republicans really turn out and overwhelm every republican on the ticket.
I got a call from a polling company to test Whatley attack ads. Rather than hang up, I listened to the lies and distortions of Cooper’s record and when asked it changed my opinion of Cooper, I said it had no effect. They asked if watched sports on tv. I said yes. Watching football this year is going to be awful.
Why in the world would any Republican bring up Covid after hundreds of thousands, maybe more, died because Donnycon told people to inject bleach or take horse dewormer instead of focusing on a vaccine and widely available tests?!
We're seeing this kind of thing locally. The Republican Alamance County Commissioners are digging in their heels over a widely unpopular movement by some Moms for Liberty types to ban or sticker any "woke" book they don't like and are chattering a lot about how "Marxism" has infiltrated the library and the public schools in some kind of bizarre, vague conspiracy.
The effort's being led by one Commissioner elected in the last election cycle that moved to Alamance in 2019. Before that, he spent his entire adult life since the 80s as a political operative and consultant for national and state level Republican political campaigns and PACs, like Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform.
It's a pretty obvious ploy to try and drive turnout with their base.
Republicans have been in rerun mode this decade. See such rehashes as "Politician Switches Parties to Let Dominant Party Get Their Way" and "Person Switches Parties to Run for Auditor to Get Back at Their Old Party." This time, gender and party swapped and infinitely worse.
