Great article. Now why don’t democrats go into his district and build a campaign that highlights how Columbus county could be just like Orange County if only they didn’t have Brendan Jones? Democrats need to focus on how republicans have used ideology and do nothing politics to establish a system that keeps failing the county. It needs to be hammered.

I'm sure he takes great pride in representing one of the least educated and unhealthy districts in the state. He needs his people to be ignorant and bigoted to keep his job.

You nailed this post. Republicans have turned running on nothing into an art form. Thank you for calling them on it.

Thomas, you should contact the editor of the local newspaper and the closest daily newspaper and give them this column. Let’s see if they print it and see how Jones reacts

Thomas, May I suggest a quick listen/scan of Heather Cox Richardson's Letters from an American <heathercoxrichardson@substack.com> December 12th, for those who have ten minutes? Really an extraordinarily illuminating historian. And an easy listen or read. :-) In describing Doug Jones' entry into the Alabama US Senate race against Master Tuberville, she mentions a 1916 book, "The Passing of a Great Race" by a lawyer named Madison Grant. She notes Hitler had read it and wrote to Grant in the early '30s, describing it as "his Bible". Grant's argument about the superiority of northern Europeans as a race shines brightly yet today among out MAGA friends :-( helps me understand our leader of the House a bit better.

Thanks for this insightful comparison of two areas in NC. It’s a shame that Columbus County has elected a shameful leader to represent them in the NC Assembly. They deserve better.

Removing porn smut and age-inappropriate graphic sexuality from school libraries equates to waging a "culture war"? It seems more like a war on decency waged by the Left's educrats.

What did the Orange County schools do or provide that would qualify as “porn smut” or “age-inappropriate graphic sexuality” in their school system?

Just wanted to correct one point: Whiteville does have a hospital. It's probably the biggest employer in the town aside from the schools.

Thanks. I put a correction on post, but it won't correct on the email.

You may want to check and correct your statement about the hospital system. There is a hospital in Whiteville.

Mark,

You're spot on regarding "hospitals". There are actually several specialty facilities.

But perhaps Thomas might have been referring to a "Community Needs Health Assistant Report" issued this past October. https://crhealthcare.org/about-us/

Here's an interesting quote from it

"General Health Rankings

• Columbus County was ranked as the least healthy county in the state of North Carolina for the years 2009 – 2014 ranking 100 out of 100. In 2025 some improvement to the overall rank was achieved with a score of 96 out of 100. The health outcomes ratings (morbidity, mortality) were 96 among the health factors ratings (social, economic, environment, health behavior factors). Health rankings released for 2025 showed Columbus County ranked 91st in the state in Health outcomes and 92nd in Health Factors
