I agree that resistance from within is powerful, and Tillis' standing up should be welcomed. If it's big enough, a band of cowards following the leader might actually look like courage.

I totally agree with you and your stance on Tillis. I think he will end up on CNN as a go to, not MS NOW. he’ll need a job and that’s what he’s auditioning for.

Again , it’s amazing how one becomes free to criticize once a decision not to run for re-election

I think you are absolutely correct. Tillis could have retired quietly but chose instead to stand up to Trump. I’m a Democrat but I think it will take republicans like Tillis to right our sinking ship.

Great comments! Thanks for clarifying - I still love you!

Thommy did just vote for ICE funding. So. Nothing he says is even his own truth!

I agree with you Thomas, the Senator has long held different opinions than the administration over foreign affairs as did his predecessor. He has move to the middle as we all do with age and experience. His moderate stance will bring more folks together for a common sense and humanitarian concern than will being at the end of either the far right or left spectrum.

Thomas, I understand your view and I agree with you. Tillis isn't great, but we need all the help we can get.

Thomas, such a excellent explanation of the confusion between politics v policy. That description could be a great unit in every history/government class. Assign students to take a current event and assess what is policy or politics. The media and voting public would benefit from distinguishing between political theater and actual policy that affects their lives. Remembering all TV stations focused on an empty podium waiting for candidate Trump and not covering Candidate Hillary Clinton’s major economic polices that would actually affect voters lives.

I agree witth you. He's still casting a lot of heinous and indefensible votes, but he has also shown more spine (who knew??) than many others.

Let's not let the love of perfection become the enemy of progress.

It is good to have Tillis speaking up at this critical time, as head-turning as it is to be on the same side with him on some important issues. It is hard, though, not to be suspicious of his motives and to wonder what timetable he is working on. Presumably, Tillis is coming back to North Carolina. I doubt he is ready to ride into the sunset.

Sorry but Tillis is nothing but a back stabbing RINO! If he ever runs again it should be as a Demonrat Communist. America would not have this illegal alien problem if Demonrat Communists had done their Constitutional duty and protected our southern border instead of letting America be invaded by all the third world trash from around the world all at Taxpayer's expense! This trash have stolen billions of taxpayer dollars thru their damn scams with 80% + of all of them on welfare & food stamps. Every one of the Demonrat Communists should be voted out of office. If these leftist Demonrat Communists get in the way of ICE doing their job of deporting these criminal illegal aliens, they DESERVE what happens to them! They should be arrested and deported with all these illegal aliens they love so much! The ONLY reason Demonrat Communists wanted open borders is to destroy America so the damn traitorous Demonrat Communists can win elections and stay in power! PROVE ME WRONG! AMERICA AND AMERICANS FIRST! To hell with the rest of the world. The world is not our problem or responsibility! Southern Rebel Biker.

You would be wise and take care not to trigger a comparison of scams. Your side would be shamed and scorned.

You seem to be a bot. Blocking.

I agree with your stance.

Altho I haven’t liked Tillis I really appreciate your sharing the things he’s done right. I read bill kristol avidly, who would have guessed that some of the staunchest critics of this administration are Republicans. I think we need them to resurrect the Republican Party and save our country from MAGA. So keep telling us the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Thanks for this post. I understand he's going to be interviewed by Politico for their weekly podcast.

I wonder (though he'll not say it publicly) how much he was stunned by the surrender of the GOP Senate to Trump. Love or hate their politics, i can't imagine McConnell, Frist, Lott, and certainly Dole outsourcing the agenda to the WH. For damn sure Harry Reid wouldn't do that for Obama.

Tillis is a legislator, and the GOP is just a bunch of ventriloquist dummies for Trump. That bothers him, I'm sure.

Good post.

Fuck Trump.

Thanks for this post, and all of.your work. If we're going to turn this national nightmare around, what Tillis is doing helps.

We'll never forgive him entirely for not following Burr's lead and voting to remove Trump from office given the opportunity (which would have disqualified him from ever running again). And it's frustrating when electeds, judges and others find their principles on the way out the door.

But we're in this extraordinarily disturbing and dangerous moment on many fronts, and Tillis is weighing in on some of the worst of it. If only more of his colleagues would grow some spine, as well. We'll hope but not hold our breath.
