SPEAKER 1
Hi, I'm Thomas Mills with the Politics NC Podcast. We're back with another episode of Restless Natives. And as usual, we have Anderson Clayton, chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party. And we have Travis Fane, a former journalist who has covered North Carolina for years and has always got sharp insight. Guys, thanks for being here. Thank you.

Thank you. I think we need to start this week with the budget. The House passed a budget this week and it had some good things in it and some bad things in it. To me, what was most interesting was Democrats basically supported it. And Travis, as the reporter on the call,

Oh I live right down the road from Tillis. I’m planting a big fat sign in his honor on the island right across from his dock. Reminder to vote for US

Hard to plan five years out when we have trouble scheduling lunch next next week or remembering events further than three months in the past. :-)

In North Carolina two-thirds or more of our 100 counties are "rural". It's not unusual to find families there who've occupied the same land for multi-generations - dare I note 4 or more? When we grow up unchallenged by different ways of thinking on the part of new acquaintances or living in new environments, it's hard to handle challenges of change.

Thomas, you touched on your experience of moving to the Triangle way back.

And we elect folks to represent us with whom we're "comfortable".

May I suggest keeping a quiet eye on our Minority Leader in the House? I believe the decision to allow the Dems an open vote was very well considered.

Travis - thanks for bring up the importance of revenue. Wish the media would remind us from time to time that the top federal rate in the mid-50's was 91%, on income over 400k (2.5M in today's dollars). It remained through the 60's and 70's at a top rate of 70%. Even the 1981 Economic Recover Tax Act only dropped the top rate to 70%.

Today, 2024? 37% on income north of $609k.

And let's not even bring up corporate taxes, or the absence thereof :-)

Anderson - thank you so much for your energy! :-) Having personally been active in the Party's somewhat more "moribund" past, starting with Skipper Bowles, 'tis a real pleasure to follow Party outreach today :-)
