i think Cooper wold make a spectacular candidate, and more important a spectacular senator. And this, to me, is the best thing he has going for him. It’s one thing to win the seat, and reclaim it from Republican hands. But what happens after that is SO much more critical. Especially now. We don’t just need a “winner” we need someone who knows how to govern and Cooper has proven himself more than capable of that — even in a hostile environment. None of his 8 years int he Governor’s mansion came with friendly faces in the legislature, and the best it got was a couple o years without a veto-proof majority.

My ONLY worry about Cooper is that hell be 69 by the time the midterms come around. Which means he’ll be 75 at the end of his term. I have to wonder if he even wants to spend his golden years in DC. And I can’t imagine him running for another 6 years after that. But if we can get the kind of quality out of those first 6 years that I think we would, it gives us a chance to build up the bench, and prep somebody as a successor.

On the Republican side… I kinda wish Tim Moore would run. He’d get his clock cleaned, and it would put paid to his political career. Maybe we could dig up George Holding and get hi to primary Moore. His sole contribution to the state political scene was to put an end to the political ambitions of Paul Coble and Renee Elmers. Maybe Moore for thre hat trick?

I hope Moore's ambitions get the better of him, but he will play it safe. He was too chicken shit to take on a dead man walking Madison Cawthorn in a hand drawn MAGA district that Cawthorn did not even live in instead opting to nuke the district in a D lean to comply with court order.

Tim got a Maserati in Raleigh and won't leave DC without a Bentley.

Don Davis worries me. He votes with Republicans at times. He would be a weak senator in my opinion. We need a solid Democrat.

The important words are “at times”. It’s that thinking that we need. Think of it as a matter of give-and-take. Meeting in the middle over the most pertinent part.

You have a far higher opinion of Tim Moore than any of us Democrats living in Moore’s “heavily gerrymandered district.” Everyone, and that includes his fellow Republicans, know that he always expects some sort of payback or cut of the expenses for government and large private corporate projects (see the Two Kings Casino project). He just continues to grift upward. Like his hero and role model Trump himself.

Isn’t he the one who held up Medicaid Expansion in NC for those idiotic casinos?!

I don't see Lara Trump on the ballot because the Donald would not want to run the considerable risk of a Trump losing. (Which is why I hope she is on the ballot.)

Cooper by a mile. He's what the country needs in the Senate: a successful AG, a successful Governor, and PRINCIPLED!

I do think his campaign should take advantage of his personality too: announce his candidacy in Mt. Airy, use mockingbirds to, well, mock the Goofy Old Party and their Goofy Old President ...have fun and get some national attention.

I agree with you about Tim Moore. He is so far up the Trump agenda that he is not effective except as another vote for him. He doesn’t respond to questions with anything but a Trump-stamped post. Sigh.

My county has shifted from Foxx to Jeff Jackson, and then Moore. Foxx is an old hateful biddy, but at least her staffers respond with honest but wrong reasons for her being a bitch. Jackson was more often sending out press releases than responses, but Moore is a total sack of shit if he even bothers to reply.

It's Cooper, all the way. He's proven to be steadfast and courageous under fire as a Democrat.

I think Cooper is a capable leader without much charisma. People are tired of old white men running things. If he can win, I’ll support him though over any repub candidate.

I completely agree with you Thomas, but remember what I mentioned about Jim Hunt being a popular governor and losing to Jesse "Jeremiah Jubilation Day" Helms. As the late Chub Swell would say, "call your next case."

Roy was a great governor but I think he’s too old. He could have a hard time getting the younger voters excited enough to come out. Democrats are not doing a good job of finding that strong candidate, especially in a state like NC where the opportunity is strong.

Another name to look out for, perhaps not in a national level or even statewide, is Richard Ojeda. He is a retired Army soldier running for congress in the 9th district, which includes Fort Bragg (Liberty). He served many years at Fort Bragg and even briefly threw his hat in the ring for President in 2018. Now, the 9th district is considered a 9-point swing for the republicans, but with Ojeda's Army background, he could possibly do the unthinkable and win that district. Considering Trump's attacks on the VA, I would not rule out Ojeda winning the 9th.

Pat Harrigan is a joke. The only reason he is in DC is because Patrick McHenry was scared he would end up Speaker of the House. Pat was a perennial also ran until then, and will be in any GOP senate primary.
