I’m Thomas Mills for PoliticsNC. Today is Thursday, March 27, 2025 and the Republic is still standing but it’s being sabotaged by its own government.

The bumbling National Security Team that allowed an independent reporter, Jeffery Goldberg, into a Signal group chat about an airstrike in Yemen keeps stepping on the rake. They’re like a bunch of Keystone Kops. I hear Benny Hill music every time I see one of them on the screen.

When the story broke, Director of Defense Pete Hegseth called Goldberg a liar, only to find out that the administration had admitted the mistake. In other words, Hegseth revealed himself to be the one lying.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz told Congress that nothing in the chat group was classified. Then they attacked Goldberg and claimed he was overstating what was said in the chat.

So, Goldberg released the chat and made them all out to be liars.

So how did we end up with such a bunch of Bozos as Members of the Cabinet? Well, people like Thom Tillis, who knew better, approved them.

Way back in December, when people of all political stripes were criticizing the Cabinet nominees, Trump and his cronies started putting pressure on Republican Senators to approve them. They threatened retribution, like primarying incumbent Senators.

Back then, Thom Tillis was still pretending to have a spine. He told the press that the pressure campaign might back-firing on the Trump administration.

Just a month later, Tillis was the one bending to the pressure. He voted to approve Hegseth and every one of the nominees he knew to be incompetent.

Now, he’s trying to cover up for them. On Monday, Tillis told the press it would be a one-day story.

We’re on day four now and pressure is mounting for somebody to take the fall.

But Tillis isn’t just defending incompetence. He’s defending an assault on our government. He said yesterday that he would support closing Social Security offices even though the Administration is ending phone support for many senior citizens.

He supports Musk’s order to freeze FEMA grants. We still have thousands of people in Western North Carolina waiting for that support. And now we have wildfires in the mountains that might force people to abandon their homes. Thom Tillis will leave them high and dry.

Thom Tillis is covering up for incompetence in the Cabinet he supported. He’s hanging senior citizens out to dry. And he’s abandoning victims of disasters in own state.

And next year, he’s going to ask for your vote. Don’t forget.

I’m Thomas Mills signing off for PoliticsNC

We might have to wait for the midterm elections to replace snake oil salesmen like NC Senator Tillis, but that may not be the case with Trump.

The orange Bozo and his MAGA cult have gone too far. His followers were initially thrilled with the firing of government employees, but the excitement is fading. They are selling their fishing boats, defaulting on car loans, and getting laid off by private employers due to cost-cutting measures. Now, there is no work for them.

We tried to warn them that Trump is a loser who has never succeeded at anything except running a con. But they ignored us and the evidence we offered as proof: thirty-four felony convictions (yes, convictions, though the judge discharged the sentence), numerous civil actions involving tax fraud, and predatory behavior meant nothing to them. To them, Trump is the second coming. Hallelujah, what a hell of a way to be cast into poverty and tough times!

It's kind of you to think he has any dignity or awareness. We all know he's a tax bloated jellyfish

Every time I’ve written to Tillis or called his office, I get a bunch of boilerplate gibberish in response. No accountability to constituents. The only remedy to counter the corruption and stupidity is to outvote them at every opportunity.

Perhaps the most aggravation comes from the lack of acknowledgment and pushback from the Right. Don't expect a lot of Patriots to step up but... crickets! I fantasize about a movement to paint all their children and grandchildren with their reckless behavior in the hijacking of Democracy. How about "I know you and what your grandfather didn't do back in 2025"

Most of what this administration does makes little sense unless you presume that their intent is to destroy the US Republic. Given that assumption, all the misdeeds and ,alfeasance makes sense.

That empty suit knows better than to ask for MY vote. I've told him often enough.

Tillis is far, far worse than just complicit in the latest Cartoon Network caper of the cabinet. He’s complicit in approving nominees that are every day bringing us closer to Banana Republic status, and turning the US into a country where masked government agents in unmarked vans snatch people off the streets, with no due process, no warrant, no probable cause except they say so. He’s totally okay with Herr Drumpf disappearing people, as long as those people are brown enough to provide him a fig leaf he can hide behind (and that doesn’t require all that big a fig leaf, considering Trump has his balls in a box in a bathroom at Mar al Ego. It happened again today in Boston of all places, as a Turkish Fulbright Scholar at Tufts University was black bagged for something-something Hamas (which, it might be worth remembering, is a Palestinian — not Turkish — organization).

Not that I expect Tillis to care. But sooner or later, he’s going to have to face the fact that he can be a feckless cuck and stay in Fat Donny’s good graces, or he can sack up and maybe stay in ours. But he can’t do both.

"[I]n a box in a bathroom at Mar al Ego" has a strong poetic meter. Sounds like a poetic line with 7 monosyllabic words in syntax with two quite fitting disyllabic words.

Don't live in NC any longer, but never would have voted for Tillis anyhow. Apart from being part of the MAGA crowd, Tillis lied about where he lived so he could vote where he wanted to. AND, if you had a problem involving something in North Carolina and asked him/his office for help: NO ANSWER FROM ANYBODY!!! They must have found out I'm a registered Democrat, and so of course would never lend a hand to anybody except a Republican.

Hopefully the Great State of North Carolina will pull its sixth point of contact out of its third point of contact and vote for neither Tillis nor Budd or any other MAGA clown. That is, if we still can actually vote in free and fair elections anymore, which sadly may be an open question at this point.

That is also my greatest fear—that free elections will be tossed out the window.

Man, there's gotta be a better way to agree with a comment that "LIKE" with a big ol' heart icon! We both post grim, pessimistic observations and Substack is like "YAY! GOOD TIMES, GOOD TIMES!" No, really, Substack--this sucks lemons.

Tillis asks for my vote- I’m not sure I’ll be able to stop laughing long enough to answer him. I am unable to think of one thing he’s ever done to help anyone except a wealthy campaign donor.

Certainly nothing for his "regular" constituents in that area. Never even a personal letter (only a form letter from his office) when I contacted them for some help that I assumed a politician in NC could help with in the state. NOPE!!!

I've sent Tillis several emails telling him that the destruction of our democratic republic would be HIS legacy if he didn't stand up to the orange hobgoblin as did Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

I guess he's okay with that as long as he gets to keep his position of power with all the perks that come with it, the people be damned.

You're right about Tillis every time. Additionally, let's not forget that Ted Budd and the GOP Congressional reps are just as bad or worse in some cases. Tillis deservedly gets lots of heat because he surely knows better and pretends to be a statesman. Budd voted to overturn the 2020 election and supports the entire MAGA horror show wholeheartedly.

As to the house, My congressman, Richard Hudson, heads up the NRCC and leads the way in recruiting wingnut fascist candidates, raising their money and crafting their false and ugly campaign messages, as well as assisting with voter suppression.

We need to put the spotlight on all of them wherever and whenever you can

Here’s hoping that nominal human Ted Budd can also pull off R. Budd Dwyer’s classic move.

Tillis is a damn joke, playing his games of anything to get re-elected. Has done nothing for NC other than take up space with his ego.

And remember: he lied about where he lived (trailer; different city or county in NC) so as to stay in power. He's as bad as Trump et al. in terms of believing in telling the truth.
