Voter suppression was also at play. I was at the polls during early voting; many voters were turned away or didn’t come in because they had no ID. At one site, I saw a woman remain in her car while several others in the car went in. When I asked, she said that she’d lost her driver’s license and couldn’t get an appointment at the DMV. Others were turned away without being given a chance to cast a provisional ballot. This was the first year of ID requirements and it was a mess. Voter ID requirements disproportionately impact low income and also Black voters. I saw this repeatedly, and I am just one person who volunteered at the polls greeting voters in one county. Other volunteers reported similar experiences.
