For all intents and purposes, centrists (AKA corporate) Democrats are being increasingly seen as 'Diet MAGA' politicians because they prefer to serve the corporate interests and not the average American. That's why progressive (AKA Democratic Socialists of America) are winning most elections in the nationwide Democratic primaries. The media paints these DSAs as radical. However, what is radical about healthcare for all? Ending foreign wars? Taxing the rich to pay their fair share? Affordable housing? The American people are fed up with the corporate Democrats because they are practically no different than republicans. It's time for politicians who actually want to help the average Americans, and the DSAs are the ones that will do it.
The polls have been consistently wrong by around 10 points or more. See Michigan and Wisconsin primaries for example. Older Dem political operatives seem to think it’s business as usual. It’s not. People don’t want things to go back to the status quo that existed even under Biden.

I’ve decided that North Carolina, my birth state of which I have been extremely proud for most of my 80 years, has slipped a bit thanks to the trauma that republicans have visited on it over the last 16 years. We used to be fairly far sighted and relatively progressive considering our position in the Mid Atlantic. We weren’t deep Bible Belt but we did have our share of churches in every town one could drive through. We valued education. We had some of the premier schools and universities in the country. There was enough progress driving the economy to develop the Research Triangle Park. We finally got an interstate system that cut drive time from Asheville to Durham from 8 hours to 4 and we could be in Wilmington in another 4. We elected good leaders from slates that had decent candidates on the ticket so that even if someone from that “other” party got elected, we figured we’d still be OK.
It seems to me though that we’ve become scared, tenuous, afraid to try new things to see if they might work to make lives better. We seem to be more about me rather than thee. Why have we allowed “progressive” become scary? North Carolina is a middle of the road state for the most part but for the life of me I cannot understand what the more progressive side of our party is advocating that has everyone so freaked. Neither this state nor this country will ever be far left but if we don’t get it together, we sure as hell can turn far right in a heartbeat. Whether or not anyone wants to believe it, we are heading in that direction as I write this. Mr Trump had completely ignored the Constitution and is in the process of robbing us blind while laying waste to OUR Capital, OUR safe food and water, OUR health and the health of our children and OUR national parks. Whatley talks about crime and chaos. He talks about danger in the streets. But much of it is smoke. The GOP has grown fond of stories that cannot stand on their own legs. They call it an alternate reality. It is a way to make fear do the work that facts will not.
They say Roy Cooper let killers loose.
That is not true.
During the pandemic, the prisons were packed tight. Disease moved fast in the dark and crowded blocks. Civil rights groups sued the state, saying the conditions broke the Constitution. The Cooper administration settled the case. Some inmates were released early. Most were near the end of their sentences. It was not a jailbreak. It was not a governor throwing open the gates.
No murderer walked free because Cooper wished it.
No killer was turned loose into the night.
But the story is useful to men like Whatley. It is simple. It is frightening. And it does not need to be true to be told.
For all the alarmist conversations about progressive democrats, may I remind people that Trump will continue to be President, anything will have to go through Congress which will not move particularly far to the left, and Republicans are likely to continue to dominate the NC legislature. The more progressive democrats will have a seat at the table, but their influence won't be dramatic. I think the news media has been hyping the discord/ differences within the Democratic Party; rather what they need to do is pull together and realize that they are all one big party whose aim first and foremost must be to stop Trump (and as Cooper says, lower prices and spend money to help the average person).
