Totally! Thanks to Vanguard and BlackRock. Take a look at the majority shareholders and there you will find out why the MSM is such a mess. Then take a look at Trump Mefia and see who are the majority shareholders there!!!!
As a former newspaper copy editor in North Carolina and South Carolina, I know you are right about the major media outlets. I dropped my NYT subscription because of it. I also agree that Harris and Walz should reach out to local media in the swing states as they roll through on their bus tours.
Thank you for writing this piece. I'm a regular reader of the NYT and get WAPO headlines online.I've been increasingly annoyed at their skewed coverage. Headlines emphasize a negative slant even whether there isn't anything of substance there. If I were an opinion letter writer I would write to the Times especially.
Let's face it. The media ownership wants Trump to win, and that filters down into the newsroom. TV anchors are paid well and don’t particularly want to lose their jobs. A good is example is Jake Tapper. He said after January 6th that he would never have an election denier on his show. Fast worward to today and he is hosting the likes of Tom Cotton, Lindsey Graham and Trump shills Scott Jennings and David Urban.
I appreciate Mills referencing relevant articles on topic of "mainstream media" by Will Bunch and Mark Jacobs. Both authors in their articles include references as well, allowing us as readers to follow up with our reading for purposes of becoming ever more informed as we come to our conclusions about the "media messiness" topic. Mills is apt to make astute references in his substack posts. As readers we benefit. PoliticsNC is known for doing its homework. We're fortunate this is Mills' modus operandi.
I agree. Harris is getting ridiculous criticism for bringing Tim Walz to her CNN interview, when joint interviews are exactly what previous candidate teams did going back to Clinton & Gore, Obama and Biden. "The media" has learned nothing from their 2016 double-standards for Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump as Lawrence O'Donnell noted on MSNBC. https://jimbuie.substack.com/p/is-kamala-harris-disrespecting-the
This reminded me of a comedian's schtick...Google found it on Youtube...: "Used to be a time when when we had people who knew sh**, and people who didn't know sh**. And back in the day people who didn't know sh** respected the people who knew sh**.And you would be in a social or work situation and you'd be hearing people who knew sh** talking. "I know some sh**", another would add and "I know this sh**". The people who didn't know sh** would kinda be in the back being quiet. Why are you quiet? Well I don't know shit. I keep my mouth shut, try to learn shit." Social media, death of the fairness doctrine, are just two reasons why our heads are filled with the voices of the people who don't know sh**.
I see the Republican trolls finally found this fountain of political news and have their knives out. I’m surprised it took them this long to jump on the chance to lie and slander.
To your point, the mainstream political media is crying crocodile tears because the Harris campaign won’t play their game. Good for her!
Corporate ownership has undermined a fair press and its mission to inform without blatant bias. They’re getting what’s they’ve sown. Big media’s role for the duration of the campaign is riding on Dana Bash’s ability to ask fair and important questions tonight.
Thomas I try to read your posts just to keep up with the commentary from the far left but you chastising the media this morning is comical. It's like the golden egg blaming the goose. In fact, Harris four years ago had so little support among Democrats that she did not even make it to the first primary. In fact, Biden tapped her to help him shore up support in several traditional left demographics where his numbers were well below historical trends. She was essentially invisible as VP with the notable exception of her abject failure to have any impact on the border crisis, after Biden made a big deal about putting her in charge. Now, after all the best and ultimately failed efforts of the democratic machine to hide Biden's decline, Harris is our only option to avoid Trump. We are being and will continue to be bombarded with clips of Harris touting the success of Bidenomics, even in the face of the high inflation that resulted from his spending, and her previous ultra liberal positions on immigration, universal healthcare--even for illegal immigrants--among many others. And the laugh and the word salads. In the end I don't think the American people will give her the presidency. In many ways I hope I'm wrong.
But for the extensive scam that the Democratic party tried to perpetrate on the public about Biden's fitness for office we might have a moderate Democratic candidate that the majority of Americans could get behind. One that understands that the US is no longer a deterrent to disruptions in the world order, that protecting borders is important, that the US is built on business, and that debt is a chicken that will eventually come home to roost. If we have another four years of Trump you have no one to blame but yourself and your party. It could have been so easily avoided.
The “high inflation” you note is a function of corporate profit taking in a world economy distorted by pandemic dislocations to supply lines worldwide. Spending that put money into infrastructure or a family’s pockets here in the US helped keep the economy from a recession and allowed us to retool and remain globally competitive. You probably noticed the benefit from the impact it had in the stock markets outstanding performance over this timeframe. Saying and thinking that the US cannot afford to both care for its citizens and enhance its productive capacity, is like suggesting you should stop subsidizing your children’s visits to the doctors or dentist, buying them books or iPads, or repairing your home and buying a new (how about an electric?) car.
You advance a theory of media distortion based on anecdotes and then you use it as an excuse for Harris not to engage with all media.
In general it seems to me dumb to speak of 'media' as some consistent entity. After all, PoliticsNC is media - as is CNN, FOX, NYTimes, National Enquirer- everything from utterly stupid to very smart and unbiased, so if you trot out a few examples of media transgressions- which do exist, have always existed- that does not prevent Harris from giving interviews to less transgressive media.
It is not an excuse for her to hide from the media. If some distort, then she should interview with some that don't distort.
Jack, the anecdotes included enhance points Mills makes. AND note the two writers and their articles mentioned in this post on media messiness. Also note the placement of these references in this post--smart move on a writer's part who is building an argument.
The introduction of a few anecdotes might introduce a point, but hardly prove anything, as you can cherry pick any phenomenon to prove any point. If the thesis is that this is some new phenomenon instead of the various media biases that we have always known post Cronkite, demonstrate that with data.
The article is specific to Harris, but I dont see any of the generalizations that wouldnt be true 5 years ago or 10 years ago, as the media being biased in various directions is no newer than chewing gum. It did not stop Obama or Clinton or anybody else, because if you avoid it, it lends people to think you are hiding things- Biden, case in point.
Such startling claims as "In some cases, the media is chasing eyeballs through click-bait headlines. " Is that a revelation that non of us knows. Or "The press is failing in its responsibility to keep the public informed without bias." Who would've known.
Blaming the media seems like the rationalization of the times and heretofore was mostly used by the right. Yes, the media can spin, though there is also very good high quality media. Choose your source. None of that is an excuse for Harris to avoid them as did Biden or we might have known he was past his expiration date earlier.
Nobody is asking Harris to go on Breitbart or even FOX, though credit for Buttigieg for his willingness, but just to expose herself to some scrutiny.
I was surprised to hear Kamala is going to be interviewed on CNN since it's been receiving a lot of negative publicity recently. I just hope it's a fair interview.
You couldn't be more right, Tom. Here in ruby red Randolph, with local news provided by the likes of Fox 8 and WFMY, I tried in vain last night to find news stories that didn't begin with "Trump". Of course, what used to be our largest 'local' newspaper, the Greensboro News & Record, long ago gave up delivering here, and they are a mere shadow of their former self. If I could get the N&O delivered out in this wasteland, I'd be tickled pink! Alas, I can't even find it in Siler City any longer.
It seems the death and shrinkage of regional and local papers has caused them to try to emulate social media with clickbait, etc., as you pointed out. The headlines of the stories seldom match the content (clickbait and switch?). but the bodies of the stories fail to deliver even a hint of depth. And they wonder why so many of us have fled to alternative sources?
Click bait, misleading headlines that top articles the majority of people do not read, and completely unfair questioning and coverage.
For example, how many Presidents to date have physically given birth to children?
I heard in one of her impromptu reporter sessions on the tarmac, Vice President Harris offered to take some questions - all of them were about tRump.
The coverage should only be about the how the twice-impeached former president, now convicted felon, is unfit and disqualified for running for office. He really should be getting mental health services. The risk of violence escalates each day he becomes more desperate.
"all of them were about tRump. The coverage should only be about the how the twice-impeached former president, now convicted felon, is unfit and disqualified for running for office. He really should be getting mental health services."
Exactly, Beverly!! All about Trump, all the time. He's a freaking tar baby - they can't let go.
Totally! Thanks to Vanguard and BlackRock. Take a look at the majority shareholders and there you will find out why the MSM is such a mess. Then take a look at Trump Mefia and see who are the majority shareholders there!!!!
The national media is corporate. That’s the problem.
If she says "Lexington", she's lost my vote.

I forgot all about your scrap with John. It didn't take much to make him mad.

You say Biden’s spending created inflation. Did you cash those stimulus checks Trump and Biden both sent you?
Still she should do a couple more before Election Day as well as be accessible to local reporters at campaign events
