Whether a state legislature has the authority to enact a law that endangers the health and welfare of all its citizens is questionable. Furthermore, the issue of interstate travel and commerce arises. Suppose an interstate bus, carrying passengers destined for New Orleans and wearing masks for disease prevention, travels through our state. Is it the duty of a local police officer to halt the bus and issue citations to every mask-wearing passenger? This not only infringes on a fundamental privacy right, but it also hinders the free flow of commerce across state boundaries. It’s akin to halting all commercial activities on Sunday, as the Old Testaments stipulates that no work should be done on the Sabbath. Although, It is evident that Jesus did not think like a Republican as his teaching indicate that human needs come before keeping the Sabbath.
