The Greensboro News-Record is reporting that Phil Berger Jr. has formed an exploratory committee for a congressional run in case Howard Coble decides to retire.

Many observers expected Coble to retire last time around, it was a bit of a surprise when he ultimately didn’t. It would be very surprising if Coble was to run for another term this time around.

Other potential candidates include Alamance County Commissioner Tom Manning and former Guilford County GOP Chairman Bill Wright.

Berger Jr., who serves as Rockingham County District Attorney, would be the immediate frontrunner should he jump into the race. And because Mitt Romney won NC-06 by almost 17 points, any Republican nominee would be a strong favorite for election.
